Step 1: Get the Basic Ingredients

Here at Chevys, the ingredients are the most crucial part of any great quesadilla. We love using fresh, high-quality ingredients. At home, you can use whatever you have on hand or take a trip out to the store. But, most quesadillas are made with three essential ingredients: a flour tortilla, cheese, and meat.

To make a great quesadilla, you’ll want to use soft shredded cheese. We suggest cheddar, parmesan, provolone, mozzarella or Monterey Jack. Keep in mind that soft cheeses melt better, helping both sides of the tortilla stick together.

And for the meat, most people use chicken or steak. However, shrimp, crab, and even pork taste great, too. Just make sure the meat is shredded or sliced so you can spread it easily. If you want to make a vegetarian quesadilla, go ahead and use pinto beans, black beans or tofu instead.

Step 2: Choose Your Toppings

Now it’s time for the fun part: the toppings. Some people like their quesadillas plain and simple, but others like a little more flair. If you’re up for trying something new, try your hand at these unique quesadilla recipes. For the most part, fresh veggies and herbs are popular additions. We recommend:

  • Diced tomatoes
  • Chopped onions
  • Green peppers
  • Mushrooms
  • Red pepper flakes
  • Avocado
  • Chili powder
  • Salt and pepper

Keep in mind that some vegetables will have to be cooked separately beforehand.

Step 3: Start Cooking

You can cook a quesadilla at home on a stove or grill or bake it in the oven. For this recipe, we’ll be focusing on the stove method.

  1. To start, lightly grease a skillet with butter or oil.
  2. Turn on the stove to medium or medium-high heat. When the skillet is evenly coated, add the tortilla.
  3. Now you can start to add your toppings. For this, we’re going to be focusing on just one half of the tortilla, because we’ll be folding it later. Start by sprinkling the cheese on one half. Then, you can add the meat and other toppings on that same half.
  4. Next, fold over the tortilla so that all the fillings are completely inside. Use a spatula to seal down the edges. If you need to, you can flip the quesadilla until both sides have a light, even crisp.

Step 4: Enjoy

Remove the quesadilla from the skillet and turn off the heat. Cut it into pieces, so it’s easier to eat. To make it taste even better, add guacamole, sour cream or pico de gallo on the side. And, there you have it – your very own quesadilla at home. Delicioso!
